Dammit.  I would really like to move the whole thing over to a more complete
GUI framework, like Qt, but I don't think I'll have time to do that myself
between now and, oh, forever.

In the meantime, I tried a simpler hack... could you pull the "hwsurface"
branch to see if it helps?
